Costa Rica Fishing – Frenzy of 1,714 Billfish in 2 Days
Quepos, Costa Rica is some of the most sought after billfishing in the world. In February of 2025, I trained to become an official tournament observer, and was able to attend and observe for the 7th annual all women’s Pescador Billfish Championship. It was an experience of a lifetime.

Pescadora Billfish Championship
I was able to attend the Pescadora Women’s Billfish Championship through a program where I trained to be an official observer. Quepos, Costa Rica is located on the Pacific side of the country. While difficult to get to, it is home to some of the best of Costa Rica fishing. it’s well worth the trip!

Sailfish and Marlin
Costa Rica fishing includes an incredible number and sized sailfish and blue marlin. I was seeing over 20 sailfish being caught a day, per boat, along with a number of blues per boat, each day. Free jumping sailfish and marlin could be seen in every direction throughout the day. I’ve never seen so many billfish in one location at the same time. If billfish is on your bucket list, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Women’s Championship
The 2025 Championship saw 260 women anglers release more than 1,700 billfish over a two day tournament held at Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica. It was awe inspiring to see so many women taking on the world.

Friends and Fishing
The Pescadora is an excellent tournament for all women, whether friends or family. Some of my own Florida Keys friends were competing in the event, and I have rarely felt so proud to see women out doing what we are typically told we cannot.
