Guatemala Fishing and Tournament Delivered Amazing Memories
Just another sailfish vacation, straight out of a fairytale. This fishing vacation was a 3 day tournament followed by a day of fun fishing with friends. Not to mention, I got to fish with the one and only Guy Harvey!
IGFTO in the Guatemala Billfish Invitational
This year I was fortunate enough to be selected to observe for the Guatemala Billfish Invitational through the International Game Fish Tournament Observers program. Guatemala fishing is an incredible experience, with billfish being the focus of this tournament. This tournament was based out of the Pacific Fins Resort. I observed on 3 different boats over the 3 day tournament.

One day two of the tournament, I had the privilege of observing on the boat Dr Guy Harvey was fishing on. After the first, big comfortable boat tried to sink on us, we transferred over to a much smaller boat, usually used to take photos of tournament boats. The small boat made for an intimate fishing experience that was like none other. With triple and quad sailfish hook ups it was an experience of a lifetime!
Fishing for Sailfish
Guatemala fishing is known by serious offshore anglers everywhere. After all three days of the tournament were done and in the books, the crew of observers set out on our own 1 day sailfish tournament. We spent the day sharpening our own tournament fishing skills. The crew let us be very hands on, and taught us the finer details of dropping back dead baits to these feisty sailfish. Even with 3-4 sails on at a time, the average time from hook up to release was 2 1/2 minutes. It was a great experience!

The Guatemala sailfish experience is like none other. From the personal service at Pacific Fins Resort to every top notch fishing crew, it was nothing but a relaxing and memorable time. The hundreds of billfish I saw over the 4 days was something I’ll never forget. Sailfish – they never get old. Get out there and see for yourself! This place won’t disappoint.
