White Marlin Birthday Fishing with the girls
We spent the day offshore fishing with Double Down Sportfishing out of Key West Florida for my late September birthday. Our plan was to go big or go home. Blue marlin is what was really on my mind. I had girls of all skill levels out to fish. These girls are my go to fishing buddies and everyone brings everyone up and cheers each other on. It’s never a bad day with these girls. The five of us have had several fishing adventures, with so many more to come.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
The day started slow, but with plenty of bubbles flowing and some killer dance partying, we were having a great time!. Feathered boas, disco ball cups and glitter skirts were all the rage during the early morning hours. We were ready for whatever the day would bring, fish or no fish.
The Mahi mahi showed up once we got pretty far offshore, as we expected for late September on Key West. We had a blast catching fish in all its chaos, but the day wasn’t bringing the billfish I was hoping for. My hopes were set in a sailfish, or to just see a blue Marlin free jumping in the distance. The horizon was still as glass, and September is the time for blue marlin. He had to be there.
It was time to bring out the secret weapon. So I dug into my bad of tricks, past the boa feathers and disco ball cups, and brought out the billfish lucky charm, my pickle costume.
The White Marlin Unicorn
The pickle costume is legendary in it’s own right. I’ve caught many marlin while wearing this fantastic outfit. Living on A Prayer by Bon Jovi came on the radio, and I had a pickle dance of a life time. Minutes after the dance ended, some of my finest work, I must say, a white marlin popped up in the spread, like a beautiful unicorn.
She ate her prized lure fast and often. She jumped and danced and said hello. She made quite the entrance to the party. Beautiful and spirited, as I always imagined she would be, my heart was full and happy.
As fast as she was there, she was gone. Leaving nothing but shattered dreams, scattered boa feathers and a dusting of glitter. White marlin was never on my bucket list before, but she is there now. Front and center. I dream about her often … Dazzling and sparkling in the September sunshine.
Best Birthday Ever
We fished the rest of the day, with lots of throw back mahi and some dancing action. All in all it was a beautifully perfect birthday with the girls. Capt Brice and Jameson were some of the best I’ve ever fished with, being serious about the fishing, but also let the girls be girls. They brought as much fun as they have skills, and they have some serious fishing skills. All the ladies caught dinner and were grinning from ear to ear. And I …. I got to see my unicorn. Happy birthday to me!
